CANCER

Cancer, This Is an extremely scary word to some people. This is a very sensitive blog for me because I had my grandpa taken away from me right before I was born. He suffered colon cancer and unfortunately it took his life. There are over 100 cancers that affect humans. As of right now to my understanding cancer is incurable. Scientists and doctors have been breaking their necks trying to find a cure. Tons of people lose their life to cancer each day. You can fight cancer however. You can “treat’ it with a method called chemotherapy. Which is where the doctors use medicine or drugs to treat cancer. Chemotherapy scares people because of how it effects the body. But sometimes that is your only option. I am going to talk about cancer more in detail. I will also be talking about carcinogenic classification.  Cancer is a group of diseases which involves abnormal cell growth. These cells also have the potential to invade other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms for cancer can include a lump, abnormal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or even bowel problems. Tobacco is one of the main reasons for cancer deaths. It makes up for approximately 22% of them. You can also inherit cancer from your parents. That is very scary to think about.  Something interesting I found were the “six hallmarks of cancer”. These characteristics are required to cause a malignant tumor. Malignant means that it spreads and destroys normal tissue and organ function. Anyway back to the 6 hallmarks. For some
1)      Cell growth and division absent the proper signals
2)      Continuous growth and division even given contrary signals
3)      Avoidance of programmed cell death
4)      Limitless number of cell divisions
5)      Promoting blood vessel construction
6)      Invasion of tissue and formation of metastases
Metastases is the spreading of a cancer cell from one organ to another without being directly connected to it.  I feel like these hallmarks represent and show that every day we are getting closer and closer to finding a cure. The main causes of cancer are due to carcinogens. The definition is a substance capable of causing cancer in living cells. There are many different classifications of carcinogens. There are 3 well known lists of internationally known carcinogens. Those lists are the IARC, the ACGIH, and the European unions CLP.
IARC: The International Agency for Research on Cancer
ACGIH: The American Conference of Governmental industrial Hygienists
CLP: Classification of the European Union
The classifications are listed below.

Group 1: carcinogenic to humans.
Group 2A: probably carcinogenic to humans
Group 2B: possibly carcinogenic to humans
Group 3: not classifiable to its carcinogenicity to humans
Group 4: probably not carcinogenic to humans
This blog is only supposed to be around 500 words. I cannot put all the information that we have on cancer into that many words. If you want to do more research there are endless websites and cases and resources for you to look up yourself. What if you start researching and it interests you? Maybe one day you will find the cure to cancer. To learn more about cancer and the classifications of carcinogens click on the links below.
