Hello, today in my blog I
am going to talk to you about dermal absortion. You may be asking what dermal
means. The definition of dermal is of or relating to skin and especially to the dermis. Dermis is the sensitive
vascular inner mesodermic layer of the skin.
Epidermal absorption is a route which all types of substances can enter the
body through the skin. There are other ways toxincs can enter the body these ways are inhalation, ingestion, and
injection. Dermal absorption is a route of exposure for toxins. Dermal
absorption is also a way you can administer medication such as lotions and
creams. Many factors come into play when dealing with dermal absorption. The
most important factor is concentration of the substance. Toxins effect
everybody differently. A little bit of a toxin can be deadly to one person but
barely effect someone else. Another big factor is the condition of the skin. Cuts
and abrasions can make substances absorb into your body faster. Radiation from
the sun can absorb into your skin. This can lead to severe sun burn, sun
poisoning, and even melanoma. This can be prevented by sunscreen being directly
applied to the skin. Skin absorption describes the movement of substances from
the outer surface of the skin. Absorption directly relates to the amount of the
substance that is being exposed. Also the possible effects that the substance
will have on the organism. The thing that is dangerous about dermal absorption
is that human skin can come into contact with toxins intentionally and
unintentionally. Dermal absorption can occur from environmental, occupational,
or skin exposure to toxins. cosmetics like makeup can affect the body in a poor
way as well. Skin disease (dermatitis) is one of the most common occupational disease.
The amount of
chemical substance that is absorbed
through the skin can be measured directly or indirectly. Studies have shown
there are differences in the absorption of different chemicals. Measurements in
rats, rabbits or pigs may or may not reflect human absorption. Finding
the rate at which agents penetrate the skin is important for assessing the risk
from exposures.
There are multiple methods to prevent dermal absorption.
.
required to wear gloves/ protective clothing
.
warnings to wash immediately if the chemical comes into contact with your skin
. Limit
exposure times to the chemicals. For example, workers can only work with
chemicals for a certain length of time per day.
Dermal
absorption is a very serious issue when it comes to health and safety. Because
it is the easiest way for toxins to enter your body. Dermal absorption can vary
because your skin can absorb good things and your skin can absorb bad things. Your
skin can absorb sunlight. On the bright side of that you can get a nice looking
tan and also sunlight is a good source of vitamin D. on the opposite end of the
spectrum if your skin absorbs too much sunlight you chave a higher risk of
developing skin cancer.
